Bina Darulaman Berhad (BDB) has announced a strategic move into the silver economy by launching a new venture focused on providing comprehensive elder care services. This initiative, in collaboration with the Seterra Group, is designed to address the growing demand for elder care in Malaysia as the nation undergoes a significant demographic shift towards an ageing population.

Malaysia, like many other countries, is experiencing an increase in its elderly population, with the proportion of citizens aged 65 and over expected to rise from the current 8% to 14% by 2043. A recent World Bank study suggests that Malaysia could become a “super-aged nation” by 2056, with 20% of its population exceeding the age of 65. As the country approaches this demographic transition, the need for enhanced healthcare services, assisted living facilities, and age-friendly infrastructure is expected to intensify.

Raja Shahreen Raja Othman, Executive Director of Bina Darulaman Berhad, emphasised the opportunities that come with these challenges during his plenary address at the Seterra Dialogue (SEDIA) 2024. “We recognise the urgent need for enhanced healthcare services, assisted living facilities, and age-friendly infrastructure. While these challenges are significant, they also present tremendous opportunities for innovation and growth in elder care services. BDB plans to play an active part in exploring innovation and contributing to growth in this sector,” he stated.

The care economy in Malaysia currently faces challenges such as limited access to quality healthcare, financial insecurity, and social isolation. To address these issues, BDB is committed to revolutionising the sector through infrastructure development, human capital investment, and technological innovation. “We are engaging with stakeholders, including government bodies, private sector companies, NGOs, and international investors, to drive this transformation,” added Raja Shahreen.

Central to BDB’s venture is the development of the Aman Seterra Sanctuary in Langkawi, a long-term care establishment envisioned as a world-class retirement and senior living village. The Aman Seterra Sanctuary aims to provide a holistic and inclusive environment for seniors, offering a range of services from independent living to specialised care.

The Aman Seterra Sanctuary is designed to be an oasis of serenity, with spacious units that prioritise accessibility and comfort. It will offer 24-hour Caregiver Services, nutritious meals, and a full range of care options, including specialised geriatrics medical care, dementia support, and palliative care. Leveraging advanced healthcare technologies and smart home solutions, the sanctuary will provide personalised care services that enhance residents’ quality of life, ensuring peace of mind, dignity, and a nurturing environment.

This venture is expected to generate significant economic benefits, including job creation in the care sector, boosting local economies, and attracting foreign investments. Socially, the project aims to improve the quality of life for seniors, reduce the burden on families and caregivers, and promote social inclusion and community engagement.

“Strategic investments are crucial for transforming Malaysia’s care economy. BDB’s Langkawi project is a significant step towards achieving this goal and serves as a model for future initiatives. We can create a care economy that meets the needs of our ageing population and sets new standards for elder care,” Raja Shahreen concluded.
